Acne Scars

Acne/Acne Scars

The three main factors that cause acne are the overproduction of oil by enlarged oil glands in the skin; the blockage of the sebaceous glands that release oil; and growth of bacteria called P. acnes. Although topical or oral antibiotics and other therapies are helpful in the treatment of cystic acne, they are not usually sufficient to provide adequate control. Left under treated or untreated, cystic acne can leave scars on the face or other affected areas such as the chest and back. An acne sufferer, therefore, suffers twice -- once with the active acne and then with embarrassing and sometimes  disfiguring scars. Proper treatment brings great relief on both levels by minimizing the acne and thus preventing the scarring that would otherwise come from it. The positive emotional impact of controlling acne is immeasurable.

Exposing your skin to other sources of oil and irritants.

At The Medical Spa, we utilize light based treatments to combat acne. Once applied to the skin, the medication is absorbed in the oil glands and hair follicles and when activated by a specific wavelength of light, the oil glands are damaged and P. acnes is reduced.  People with acne refractory to other treatments often see great improvement with this treatment. Commonly treated areas include the face, the back, and the chest.  MicroLaser Peels are one of our most popular treatment choices for acne scars because patients can have dramatic results. This laser treatment removes the old, damaged, scarred skin and allows new, undamaged skin to grow in its place. People who have MicroLaser Peels find their skin to have significantly improved texture, decreased wrinkles, decreased sun spots, decreased redness, decreased pore size and improved scars.

Levulan® and PhotoDynamic Therapy™

PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT) is a state-of-the-art skin treatment involving the use of a topical photosensitizing agent in combination with a BLU-U® Light or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment. It is a safe, non-invasive treatment used successfully for the treatment of acne, sun damaged skin, sun spots, enlarged pores, redness, and actinic keratoses (earliest stages in the development of skin cancer). PDT involves the application of a clear, topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan® (a naturally occurring substance found in the human body), which is activated with a BLU-U® Light or Intense Pulsed Light. After each session, you will experience improvement in skin tone and texture. Sunspots will fade and pore size will shrink. Fine lines and wrinkles will gradually decrease in size and uneven pigmentation will improve. People with oily skin also find their oiliness improved or eliminated.
