Sun Damage and Age Spots
If your skin is discolored, excessively dry, has a leathery appearance, or is marked by deep wrinkles and dark blotches, you may have damaged your skin from overexposure to the sun.
The effects of sun damage is called photoaging and there are a variety of treatments we can recommend to greatly reduce these visible signs. Laser Skin Rejuvenation, Microlaser Peels, Broadband Light and dermal fillers such as Restylane ® and Juvéderm ™ are just a few of the treatments offered at The Medical Spa.
Age spots vary in color from tan to dark brown, in size from a small dot to the size of a quarter, and in number from one to dozens, sometimes covering most of the back of the hand, forearms, and face. Medically known as solar lentigines, they usually are flat but sometimes feel slightly elevated and rough on the surface. Age spots are the result of sun exposure throughout life. The color (tan to brown) is due to the sun's ultraviolet rays over time, causing an increase in the number of pigment-producing cells of skin known as melanocytes. Melanocytes produce melanin, which determines the skin's color. The more melanocytes and melanin produced, the darker the color of the sun spots.
A combination of lasers, peels, fading creams and sunblock are highly effective treatment methods. At The Medical Spa, our physician and medical staff can administer treatments that effectively smooth and firm up the skin and lighten age spots. Treatments can often be done during a lunch hour and there is minimal to no recovery time. Lasers can also be used to remove traces of age spots and discoloration, usually in one treatment.
Broadband light (BBL) sets new standards for the treatment of skin conditions associated with aging, active lifestyles, and sun damage. BBL utilizes the power of pulsed light to deliver excellent cosmetic results. During treatment, Broadband Light energy gently heats the upper layers of skin. The treated areas absorb the heat, which stimulates new collagen production and gives the skin a firmer, smoother appearance. Simultaneously, photo-thermal energy dramatically reduces redness, age spots, freckles and many other types of unwanted pigmentation. Any area of the body can be treated. The result… a smoother, brighter complexion with smaller pores, fewer lines and more even skin tone.
