The three main factors that cause acne are the overproduction of oil by enlarged oil glands in the skin; the blockage of the sebaceous glands that release oil; and growth of bacteria called P. acnes. Although topical or oral antibiotics and other therapies are helpful in the treatment of cystic acne, they are not usually sufficient to provide adequate control. It is a safe, non-invasive treatment used successfully for the treatment of acne, sun damaged skin, sun spots, enlarged pores, redness, and actinic keratoses (earliest stages in the development of skin cancer). PDT involves the application of a clear, topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan® (a naturally occurring substance found in the human body), which is activated with a BLU-U® Light or Intense Pulsed Light. After each session, you will experience improvement in skin tone and texture. Sunspots will fade and pore size will shrink. Fine lines and wrinkles will gradually decrease in size and uneven pigmentation will improve. People with oily skin also find their oiliness improved or eliminated.
